'Hollywood glamour' and 'nouveau romantic' are this season's top trends. Design director Diane Lewis shares her expertise.
Latest Trends
'Hollywood glamour' reminiscent of the silver screen sirens of the 1940s and 1950s is proving popular with modern brides. "We're seeing a lot of Swarovski crystals, big ball gowns in silk taffetas, swishing mermaid skirts, sleek necklines, and sparkling shoes," says design director Diane Lewis.
Another trend is 'nouveau romantic' - a vintage look with a modern twist. Gowns range from sleek to A-line using fine Italian silk satins and liquid satins and are primarily styled in warmer tones of ivory, magnolia and shades of latte. "We're using fine French Chantilly laces, silk flowers, vintage brooches, ruffles and pleats," says Lewis.
Expert Tips
- Establish a budget and then start your search. Couture is usually the more expensive option.
- Remember that couture designers need up to a year's notice to design dresses for peak season weddings. (The turn around for winter brides can take half as long.)
- Create a scrapbook of gowns that inspire you.
- Pick five designers whose designs you like and make appointments to see their gowns. Don't visit more than two in one day.
- When you go to view collections, arrive on time and with only one or two others. Any more than that looks like you're not serious and impinges on other clients.
- Always insist on a written quote and understand the inclusions.
- Never let anyone pressure you into buying a gown by offering you a better price on the day.
- If you fall in love with a design go to the designer - the biggest disasters, says Lewis, are brides who go elsewhere for a 'copy gown'.
